Can eating more actually help you to lose weight? Generally not, at least when it comes to snacking or eating meals throughout the day, though there is evidence that eating breakfast can help to reduce your weight by impacting your metabolism. This is no surprise to many mothers who often call breakfast the most important meal of the day. Is this aphorism rooted in science or just an old wive’s tale? The answer may surprise you.

Many people think that the formula for losing weight is fairly simple; consume less calories than your body burns. Scientific Evidence

A study detailed in the Journal of Physiology compared two groups over a protracted period of time. One group was asked to eat seven hundred calorie breakfasts before eleven am, but were able to choose their own food. A second group was told to fast until lunch. The study ultimately showed that during the time the study was conducted over, six weeks, those with healthy weights didn’t have much of an impact. The increased calories consumed led to stimulated activity which burned the additional calories that were consumed. For overweight individuals, their ability to burn fat was heightened when they ate breakfast. In addition, overweight individuals had less inflammation. While the study concluded that the results were preliminary and additional research is needed, breakfast consumption is recommended, particularly for the benefit that it can have in increasing your metabolism. .

Further, additional research is being directed to understand how eating foods at different times of the day, such as when you first wake up for breakfast, can have an impact on your ability to burn fat. Consuming breakfast may contribute to your body’s capacity for burning fat.

Eating breakfast is not the only way to keep trim, with physical activity and a balanced and low calorie diet also contributing to a trim and healthy lifestyle. However, there is now scientific evidence that eating breakfast is an important component to maintaining a healthy lifestyle with an accelerated metabolism.

While eating breakfast will speed up your metabolism, that doesn’t mean that you are given complete full reign when eating breakfast. Healthy choices for breakfast like oatmeal, eggs, fruit and vegetables, and whole grain cereals, all serve the purpose of fueling your weight loss and contributing valuable nutrients and vitamins to your body.
